Bangladesh High Commission Offers High Praise to YTY During On-Site Visit

YTY was visited by a senior-level delegation from the

Bangladesh High Commission

on Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, April 20. The delegation sought to visit various YTY manufacturing facilities and hostels in Sitiawan, Perak, and notice of their visit was provided a day prior to their arrival.
In attendance was the High Commissioner himself, His Excellency Md Shameem Ahsan, as well as other senior members of his team, including Mosammat Shahanara Monica, Minister (Political), and Mia Muhammad Keyamuddin, Counselor (Passport & Visa), among others.  The seniority of the attending delegation belied the serious nature of the visit, and the importance the Bangladesh government places on ensuring the welfare of Bangladeshis employed in Malaysia.
The delegation used their time on site to engage with Bangladeshi employees as they moved about their normal workplace routines, review our labor policies and practices, and visit worker accommodations and common facilities.  At present, YTY employes around 600 Bangladeshis, many of whom serve important operational roles within the organization.  Our longest serving Bangladeshi employee has been with YTY for 17 years, reflecting our commitment to provide long-term employment for employees from foreign countries (EFCs), also known as migrant workers.
During the two-day engagement, the delegation interacted directly with multiple Bangladeshi employees, and significant emphasis was placed on understanding their well-being, aspirations, and experience while working at the company.  As part of the information exchanged during this period, YTY demonstrated its continued compliance with leading standards around forced labor indicators, including the ILO and UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights conventions, our WRAP Gold certifications, which independently validated our compliance, and our MSOSH awards, which reflected our leading track record in workplace safety.

The Bangladesh High Commission also provided onsite passport renewal services, allowing for the issuance of new passports to those Bangladeshi citizens that needed it, thereby reducing the time and complexity that such renewals can typically take through traditional channels.  Approximately 200 Bangladeshi employees elected to take-up this service.

At the conclusion of their visit, the Bangladesh High Commission offered high praise to YTY.  His Excellency himself commented that he was “highly impressed with the arrangements made by the company to ensure the welfare of the foreign workers, including their physical and mental health.”  The High Commissioner went on to thank YTY for “maintaining a high standard in labor practices” for Bangladeshis, and indeed all employees from foreign countries.  These comments were subsequently echoed on the Facebook page of the Bangladesh High Commission, Malaysia.
Tuan Syed Ali Al-Jffri Syed Jan Al-Jffri, YTY’s Head of Government & Corporate Affairs, welcomed the Bangladesh delegation at the time of their arrival, and accompanied them during the two-day visit.  At the end of the visit, Tuan Syed noted “It was a pleasure to receive the Bangladesh High Commission to our manufacturing facilities.  We welcome such opportunities to closely engage with government agencies to dialogue on important matters related to employee welfare, dignity, and civil liberties, as well as showcase YTY’s high standards of care and compliance in these areas.”
Tuan Syed went on to note “We are glad the High Commission was able to interact directly and independently with many Bangladeshi employees, and walked away deeply satisfied with how they are being employed, treated, and housed.  We also appreciate the onsite passport service provided, and the fact that YTY was chosen as one of a select few companies for this pioneering program.  We remain committed to ensuring a deep focus on employee health and welfare, and to remaining an employer of choice for both Malaysians and employees from foreign countries alike.”
