We hope you enjoy reading this second edition of YTY Cares as we take you on a journey to highlight the inspiring CSR activities we have undertaken in 2023! Aliza Khalid Head of CSR ON THE COVER: Green sea turtles have been around for over 110 million years but are now classified as an endangered species due to loss of nesting beach sites, overharvesting of their eggs, and sea pollution. Segari Beach is one of only three landing sites for the green sea turtles along the entire West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, hence it is important to support conservation and rehabilitation efforts to restore their population and maintain a balanced biodiversity in the area. This was done in partnership with the Manjung Dialysis Centre, a local non-profit organisation providing life-saving kidney care to individuals from around the community, including low-income patients. According to the Malaysian Health Ministry, one in seven Malaysians suffers from kidney disease with a growing number of patients each year requiring crucial dialysis treatments. While local NGOs and non-profit organisations provide subsidised care, the cost of dialysis treatments is still prohibitive for the “B40” income category, which represents the lowest 40% of Malaysian wage earners. Dialysis patients typically require 12 treatments each month. The cost of such treatments represents on average 88% of the national minimum wage, making it unaffordable for many of those in the B40 category. Aliza Khalid, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at YTY, notes, “As a leading participant within the healthcare supply chain, we feel a moral obligation not just to ensure the well-being of our employees but also the health and welfare of individuals located within the communities in which we operate. This latest CSR activity is just one of many that we have completed this year that allows us to October 25, 2023 YTY Contributes to the Well-Being of Dialysis Patients in Manjung give back to our community, support those that are the most financially vulnerable, and generally tighten the social compact we have with our neighbors and neighborhoods.” Aliza goes on to note “While it is important to promote healthy lifestyles, it is equally important to support patient care and medical treatment to help vulnerable populations have clear and timely prognosis and a better quality of life. This will ultimately translate into longer life expectancies. Helping to offset dialysis treatment costs of RM 26,400 for 20 low income patients allowed YTY to play a small, but meaningful, part in ensuring these individuals can continue to receive critical renal care, live a normal and predictable lifestyle, and allow them to remain gainfully employed, so they can continue to take care of their families and loved ones who depend on them.” Madam Cheng Heng Ling, Honorary Treasurer of the Manjung Dialysis Centre, notes “Out of the 88 patients seeking treatment at our centre, 20 patients fall into the B40 income category. It is these individuals that often struggle to access dialysis treatments on a month-to-month basis. YTY’s sponsorship of 240 dialysis treatments targeted towards these patients greatly helped to alleviate their financial burden and ensured they received appropriate medical treatment.” Patients from the Manjung Dialysis Centre, along with Ms See Nguk Yeng, their Centre Administrator, and Aliza Khalid, YTY's Head of CSR, spending some time together as medicinal pouches were handed out for the patients in the sponsored program to store their medication YTY providing the symbolic cheque for financial support to Manjung Dialysis Centre.TY is pleased to have taken the initiative to lead an extensive beach cleaning exercise at the Lekir Forest Reserve on Tanjung Kepah Beach, in collaboration with the District Forestry Department and the Manjung City Council. The activity contributed to the environmental well-being of a protected area, as participants collected over 186 kilograms of trash that would otherwise have ended up in the sea, where it could endanger marine life. The activity was fully driven by YTY employee volunteers, with 52 members of staff generously volunteering their time. The activity was officiated by Ravi Ragunathan, Vice President, Human Resources for YTY, and attended by Azqan Dalila binti Ahmad Tajuddin, Manjung District Forestry Officer, Muhamad Yusof bin Osman, Manjung Municipal Council Health Officer, Ishak Hamid, Kampung Batu 10 Village Headman, and multiple members of YTY’s Senior Management leadership team. As part of the event, the District Forestry Department conducted a tree planting February 22, 2023 YTY Does Good for the Environment with Lekir Beach Clean-Up Do good, feel good: The happy faces of YTY employee volunteers who collected 186 kilograms of trash during the course of the clean-up activity. Azqan Dalila notes, “The Forestry Department is very happy to collaborate with YTY in this project and be included as one part of the Company’s overall CSR initiative today. This area is a protected area where the Casuarina trees we are planting act as a barrier to prevent soil erosion and mitigate flooding of nearby villages during high tide periods. We look forward to future collaborations with YTY and we thank the company for setting a good example to the local community.” Ravi Ragunathan notes, “This clean-up exercise was in one way a natural choice for us as, given our expansive manufacturing operations, environmental preservation is always top of mind to ensure we limit the impact on our environment and the surrounding habitat. The Tanjung Kepah Beach event serves as an important and visible link connecting YTY’s world-class operational practices to the external sustainability targets we have set to serve our local communities and improve environmental awareness amongst the general public.” Aliza Khalid, who leads YTY’s Corporate Social Responsibility programs noted, “Activities such as this bring our local communities together through communal volunteering and a shared sense of purpose. This activity has also given us an opportunity to engage with key community agencies such as the District Forestry Department, Manjung City Council, and the people of Kampung Batu 10. We thank them for their presence and generous support, and look forward to deepening our engagement with them in time to come. I am proud to see so many YTY staff volunteers enthusiastically geared up to do good for the environment today. I salute Team YTY, and thank everyone who has volunteered to take part in this activity.” Members of YTY with Manjung District Forestry Officer, Azqan Dalila binti Ahmad Tajuddin, at a new signage, which aims to remind the public of the need to maintain the protected area as a trash-free zone. Well done to all volunteers for gathering up all kinds of waste, large and small! A special thanks to all volunteers for their fantastic efforts! Together, we made a difference. The sanctuary is located next to Segari beach, one of only three landing sites for green sea turtles on the Western Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The activity was conducted in collaboration with the Manjung District Fisheries Department, and included 70 YTY volunteers and their families, all of whom helped to scrub the turtle pools, clear the surrounding area of trash and debris, and released 150 baby turtles into the sea from Segari beach. In addition to volunteer work, YTY donated maintenance equipment to the Segari Turtle Sanctuary that included a 20-inch chainsaw, a blower, a grasscutter, a water pump and two brand new wheelbarrows. Nur Erna Ilyana, Branch Head of Conservation & Protection for Manjung District Fisheries Department, expressed her appreciation by noting, “A big ‘thank you’ to YTY and their hardworking volunteers for reaching out and supporting the needs of Segari Turtle Sanctuary. The energy and team spirit demonstrated today was heartening. The equipment that has been graciously donated by YTY will go a long way in helping us maintain this centre, and allow us to efficiently pump in sea water to the turtle pools.” Nur Erna Ilyana went on to state “Our work at the Sanctuary is to not only educate visitors on the importance of protecting sea turtles, but equally, to collect, protect, and hatch, turtle eggs with the goal of increasing the population of sea turtles in the wild. It is estimated that only one out of one thousand baby turtles survive into adulthood. Activities such as this are therefore vital to ensure the preservation and population growth of the green sea turtle.” YTY volunteers pose for a group photo after a hard day’s work at Segari Turtle Sanctuary. YTY’s Head of CSR, Aliza Khalid, notes, “We are pleased to have played a small, but critical, role as it relates to wildlife conservation. This CSR activity fits squarely within our Corporate Social Responsibility “Pillars of Goodness” framework, specifically the Environmental Sustainability pillar. Conservation activities such as this allow us to have fun as a team, do good while engaging and educating our employees, and provide a beneficial impact to neighboring communities and businesses. We are delighted to have been able to align our efforts with World Turtle Day, which is a global event that honors these graceful creatures.” YDaywith TurtleSanctuary YTY volunteers helped clean the turtle pool at Segari Turtle Sanctuary.
